This year marks the return of the Geteodenaang Ziigwan Powwow, we come together as we
celebrate ziigwan (spring). The Greater Superior area is invited to come to the Superior Middle School
Community Events Center, 3626 Hammond Ave, to honor Superior students and uplift the next generation.
The School District of Superior and the University of Wisconsin-Superior come together for a thrilling
experience. From 1-7 p.m. on May 2nd, families can connect with the Superior Indian Education organization
to continue Anishinaabe traditions. Discover vendor tables selling native breadwork, artwork, leatherwork, and
more. KLR Concessions, Tuk Tuk Fusion and Twin Ports BBQ will be at SMS, selling delicious food. At 3 p.m.,
experience a hand drum contest.
“Powwows are very important to the Anishinaabe,” said Troy Howes, Drummer & Planning Committee
Member. “They are a celebration where everyone comes together and celebrates spring. It’s such a good
time and a good life!”
Powwows remind everyone that when the community comes together with good hearts, we celebrate not only
the season but the future. Where the next generation will continue to keep our culture, our spirit, and our
way of life. For more information or questions, please reach out to Jen Willoughby.
