A new era of Superior Boys Hockey is ready to begin. Superior High School is excited to welcome Scott Pionk to the Spartan hockey program. He succeeds Rob Downs as head coach.
The School District of Superior would like to thank Downs for his many years of service and wish him well in the future.
Pionk brings more than 40 years of hockey experience to Superior. Currently, he owns and operates the Northeast 218 Hockey Camps. During the 2021-2022 season, Pionk was NAHL Minnesota Wilderness Assistant Coach. His most recent high school hockey coaching experience was 2019-2020 when he was the Co-Head Coach for the Proctor Rails.
“Superior has a wealth of hockey history and I am honored to be named the next Head Coach,” said Pionk.
“Making connections with student-athletes and their families is one of the best things a coach can do. I can’t
wait to work with these Spartans and see them grow and continue the tradition of success.”
“We are thrilled to welcome Scott Pionk to the Spartan community,” said Ryan Haroldson, Superior High
School Principal. “Securing a coach of his caliber is a massive win for our program. With Coach Pionk leading
the next chapter of Spartan hockey, our student athletes are getting a mentor who demands excellence on
the ice and expects nothing less than exceptional leadership off of it.”
A UW-Superior alum, Pionk was an Assistant Coach at his alma mater during the 2004-2005 season. Prior to
his time in the Northland, from 1997-1999 he was the Head Coach and General Manager for USHL Waterloo
Black Hawks and was the 1997-98 Coach of the Year Nominee. Pionk was also the Assistant Coach for the
USHL Omaha Lancers in 1992-1997.
Off the ice, Pionk is a Life Teen Group Leader at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. He also owns Scott Pionk
Sodding and Landscaping, which he established in 2005.
The Superior Boys Hockey Program will begin practice on Nov. 9 and is scheduled to host its first
home game against Hayward on November 20th. Learn more about the School District of Superior’s activity
