“Mission Marge” 2026 Expedition to Include Two Bong Family Members Paying Tribute to Their Uncle

The Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center is proud to announce that “Mission Marge” is officially a go.

Following months of planning, international coordination, historical research and logistical preparation, the humanitarian and historical recovery effort centered on honoring the crash site of Major Richard Ira Bong’s legendary P-38 Lightning, Marge, and following through on our humanitarian efforts has entered its active operational phase.

After  reaching our necessary fundraising goals we are moving forward with our “Mission Marge” plan. The mission will send a dedicated team composed of Richard I. Bong Veterans Museum and Pacific Wrecks personnel to Papua New Guinea, where portions of Bong’s “Marge” aircraft remain.

The effort represents a unique collaboration between historians, veterans organizations, aviation professionals and community supporters committed to honoring one of America’s most significant World War II legacies as well as aiding the local community with our humanitarian efforts.

Mission organizers emphasize that the project is being conducted with deep respect for the historical significance of the site, the local communities of Papua New Guinea and the humanitarian partnerships supporting the expedition.

Returning to the “Marge” crash site is Justin Taylan, founder of Pacific Wrecks, who led the initial expedition in 2024.

Joining him from the Richard Bong Museum in mid-June is Briana Fiandt, Curator, and Joe Fischer, board member.

Most significantly, the team also includes two of Major Bong’s nephews.  James “Jim” Ira Bong of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and former F-15 pilot who served in the Montana Air National Guard and later flew for FedEx. Mitchell “Mitch” A. Erickson, of Nome, Alaska, is the founder of Arcticwestern Development, which conducts mining research and safety training.

The expedition goals are to:

  • Honor the “Marge” P-38 Crash Site
  • Assist with building a freshwater pipeline to the village. Their current source is a mile away
  • Providing books and additional supplies to the local school.

Additional announcements regarding expedition timing, participating partners and public engagement opportunities will be released as preparations continue.
