As rising travel costs reshape how Americans vacation in 2026, tourism leaders say travelers are increasingly trading expensive, long-distance vacations for shorter regional getaways — and Superior’s event-packed summer calendar is meeting the moment perfectly.
The term “one-tank trip” has long been used in tourism marketing to describe affordable, driveable getaways. In 2026, the concept is gaining renewed momentum as rising travel costs push more travelers toward shorter regional road trips and high-value weekend experiences.
Industry trend reports show growing interest in affordable road trips, “micro-cations,” and experience-rich weekend travel as households look for ways to stretch vacation budgets without sacrificing memorable summer experiences.
According to Hilton’s 2026 travel trends report, America’s upcoming 250th anniversary is expected to help “reignite the American road trip,” while Priceline’s 2026 travel forecast identified the Midwest’s “authenticity, affordability, and low-key cool” as key drivers behind a growing regional road-trip movement.
At the same time, recent consumer travel surveys show travelers are increasingly prioritizing shorter vacations, nearby destinations, and weekend-focused travel due to rising travel expenses and economic pressures.
Superior’s combination of waterfront attractions, festivals, live music, racing, fairs, rodeos and community events creates opportunities for visitors to build full summer weekends around layered experiences — what local tourism leaders are calling “weekend stacking.”
