Welcome To The Game

Spartans Share Good Sportsmanship

The School District of Superior is proud to offer many wonderful intramurals, activities and athletic opportunities for all our students. From DECA to lacrosse, there’s something for everyone to try at Superior Middle School and Superior High School. These opportunities help students discover new interests and help guide them to potential hobbies and skills.

The 2025-2026 school year introduced a new sportsmanship initiative focused on our school community: Welcome to the Game.

A Positive Game Day Experience

Athletics and activities play a significant role in developing our students’ character, teamwork skills and resilience. However, the energy and passion that make games so exciting can sometimes lead to moments of poor sportsmanship on the court or in the stands. This positive initiative is a proactive step to bring our focus back to what truly matters: supporting our student-athletes and honoring the spirit of fair play.

As you walk into the NBC Spartan Arena or the NBC Spartan Sports Complex, you will notice signage with “Welcome to the Game” hanging prominently for all our Spartans to see. This is a reminder to be a positive supporter of our teams.

“This initiative is all about celebrating the positive spirit of sportsmanship,” said Ella Olson, Director of Activities and Athletics. “We are ensuring that our events, whether that’s basketball, hockey, or even a concert, are a fun and welcoming environment for everyone — players, coaches, directors, advisors, officials and fans.”

Welcome to the Game highlights what being a supportive Spartan fan means. In short, treat others the way you want to be treated.

  • Spartan fans support & encourage players.
  • Spartan fans represent with class & grace.
  • Spartan fans promote fair play.
  • Spartan fans show positive sportsmanship for all – players, coaches and officials.
  • Spartan fans prioritize player well-being.
  • Spartan fan behavior reflects our school.

Fan Expectations

Welcome to the Game is more than just writing on a piece of paper or signage around an arena. It’s a simple mindset to support all student athletes, musicians, competitors, etc. Before the calendar began, all Spartan families and students agreed to be respectful and responsible at all times.

  • I will always provide support and encouragement to players.
  • I will represent my team with class, handle winning and losing with grace, and ensure that my behavior always reflects positively on our school district.
  • I will encourage players to play fairly and to the best of their ability.
  • I will practice good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive comments and support for all players.
  • I will practice good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive comments and support for all coaches.
  • I will practice good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive comments and support for all officials.
  • I will prioritize the emotional and physical well-being of our children above any personal desire to win.
  • I will acknowledge that I represent our school and community and my behavior matters.
  • I will remember the game is for the players and not for the adults.

“We recognize that maintaining sportsmanship can be a challenge across all districts,” said Dr. Amy Starzecki, Superior District Administrator. “But here in Superior, we are committed to modeling and leading the way for other communities. We believe our school community is strongest when we work together. By modeling positive behavior in the stands, we ensure our students learn valuable, lasting lessons about integrity and respect — lessons that will remain long after the final whistle.”

Good Sportsmanship Will Be Rewarded

All fans are expected to follow positive fan expectations during every event, including both home and away events. Spartan fans represent Superior even when you aren’t playing in our buildings. During home athletic games, Superior High School supervisors will provide fun incentives for fans displaying good sportsmanship throughout the regular season. These items include:

  • Spartan apparel
  • Free tickets to the concession stand
  • Free admission to future games
  • And more!

Fans who don’t show respect and follow the Welcome to the Game expectations will first result in a verbal warning. Fans may be asked to leave the event if the disrespectful behavior continues. A consistent pattern of not following these expectations could lead to your exclusion from all competitions for the rest of the school year.

If you or any of our Spartan fans witness bad behavior or have questions, we encourage you to speak with the event supervisor. You may also call our activities office at 715-394-8720 ext.41317.

Our school community is stronger when we work together. By modeling positive behavior in the stands, we teach our students valuable lessons about integrity and respect that will last long after the final whistle.
