UW-Superior to Welcome Nearly 170 High School Singers for Largest-Ever Choirfest

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will host nearly 170 high school singers from 18 schools across Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan for its largest-ever Choirfest High School Honor Choir Festival on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

“Choirfest is unique among high school honor festivals because it allows students to perform choral works with an orchestra made up of some of the best musicians in the Twin Ports,” said Michael Fuchs, director of choral activities and chair of the Music Department at UW-Superior. “This is an opportunity not available in many high schools and smaller communities, and we are thrilled to provide students from across the region with the chance to experience this wonderful music.”

The festival will feature a day of rehearsals, campus tours and masterclasses led by Fuchs and other UW-Superior faculty members.

Beginning at 9 a.m., the event will bring together students to perform Franz Schubert’s Mass in G.

“One of the most beloved works in the choral repertoire, Mass in G was written by Schubert in 1815 when he was just 18 years old,” said Fuchs. “It contains everything that makes his music enduring: lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and a warmth and sincerity that resonate with both singers and listeners.

“Alongside it, the choir will perform Christopher Tin’s Baba Yetu, a Grammy-winning Swahili setting of the Lord’s Prayer filled with driving rhythm and joyful energy.”

Choirfest will conclude with a 70-minute public concert at 7 p.m. in Thorpe Langley Auditorium featuring the high school vocalists, the UWS Chorale and the UWS Singers. Students will rehearse and perform both works with a professional chamber orchestra and soloists under the direction of Fuchs.

Tickets for the performance are $5 for adults and free for students. Thorpe Langley Auditorium is in Old Main, 1710 Weeks Ave. For questions or additional information, call 715-394-8115 or email music@uwsuper.edu.
