The University of Wisconsin-Superior Theatre Department, in collaboration with the Music Department, will present Godspell, directed by Jess Hughes. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. on April 10, 11, 15 and 16, and at 2 p.m. on April 12 and 18 in Manion Theater.
Godspell, written by John-Michael Tebelak with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, follows a small group of people who help the son of God tell a series of parables using games, storytelling techniques, and a hefty dose of comic timing.
Hughes noted that the musical’s enduring appeal is part of what makes this production special.
“Full of some of the catchiest songs you’ll ever hear, this over 50-year-old musical remains remarkably timeless,” said Hughes. “Godspell invites theatre-makers to use it as a lens through which to see the world today. Set inside an abandoned theatre, our production follows a group of young people who are overlooked, underestimated, and searching for connection. As they come together, they build a community through storytelling – ultimately reminding us that stories have the power to catalyze revolutions.”
With musical direction by Patrick Colvin and choreography by Henriette Blade, Godspell features an eclectic blend of songs ranging from pop to vaudeville as the story of Jesus of Nazareth unfolds. The production moves from energetic ensemble numbers to the poignancy of the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, bringing timeless messages of kindness, tolerance, and love vividly to life.
Sean Naughton, producing artistic director for University Theatre, emphasized the students’ enthusiasm for taking on such an iconic piece.
“The students have really jumped at the chance to tackle one of the great postmodern musicals from the 1970s,” said Naughton. “It’s probably helpful that the show’s composer, Stephen Schwartz, is still so relevant with the incredible success of Wicked in theaters and on the big screen. This is such a terrific, ensemble-driven experience, and our cast has grown incredibly close through working together so intimately. It’s amazing to watch these students grow through a collaborative experience like this.”
Naughton added that audiences can expect a lively, engaging atmosphere.
“We are so excited for audiences to experience a musical that is this interactive and fun,” he said. “The actors regularly talk to the audience and even involve them in the storytelling. The musical styles range from cabaret to folk-rock, from pop to vaudeville. There’s something for everyone to enjoy – and of course a message of community, love and belonging at the heart of it all.”
