In response to a recent food shelf closure in Superior and the growing need for food assistance in the community, Superior Choice Credit Union (SCCU) will distribute 200 free food boxes on Friday at 8 a.m. at its Tower Avenue branch.
The inspiration came after seeing food boxes distributed by the YMCA last week, which were claimed in less than 30 minutes, and the closure of a local food shelf, highlighting the urgent need facing many local families.
While SCCU recognizes that one event cannot replace the services provided by a food shelf, the credit union hopes to help bridge a small part of the gap during transition for community members experiencing food insecurity.
Each food box contains a variety of shelf-stable essentials, including pasta, rice, beans, tuna, peanut butter, cereal, oatmeal, canned fruits and vegetables and other pantry items. The contents provide approximately 25-30 meals for an individual or roughly 8-10 days of supplemental food support for a family of four, along with breakfast items and snacks.
“Our community is facing a real need right now,” said Breanna Wessberg, Vice President of Marketing and Community Engagement at SCCU. “We know we can’t solve food insecurity with one event, but we can show up for our neighbors and credit union members and do our part. Hopefully we inspire other local businesses to do the same.
The distribution will operate as a drive-through event. Community members are asked to remain in their vehicles, and SCCU staff and volunteers will place food boxes directly into their vehicles. Boxes will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
