When most people think about their local Chamber of Commerce, they probably picture a ribbon cutting, a networking event or maybe even a golf outing. And while we certainly enjoy bringing our business community together (and yes, we do appreciate a pair of oversized scissors), those visible events are only a small part of what we do every day.
In reality, the Superior-Douglas County Area Chamber of Commerce spends much of its time working behind the scenes – promoting our members, connecting businesses with opportunities, advocating for policies that strengthen our economy, helping entrepreneurs navigate challenges, supporting workforce development and collaborating with partners to ensure our community continues to grow.
Simply put, Chamber membership isn’t just paying “dues” to belong to an organization. In fact, we don’t like the word “dues.” In the last couple decades we consider membership in the Chamber as an “investment.” It’s investing in an organization that is working every day to make Superior and Douglas County a better place to own a business, work and live.
More Than Networking
Networking is often where great business stories begin. A conversation over coffee, an introduction at a Business After Five or a chance meeting at a Chamber event can spark new partnerships, generate customers, inspire mentorships, or even lead to lifelong friendships. But while those moments are important, they’re only the beginning and only part of what we make possible.
Week in and week out, the Chamber works behind the scenes to help entrepreneurs launch new ventures, assist businesses pursuing growth, connect employers with workforce resources, and guide companies toward the organizations and experts best equipped to help them succeed. Whether it’s navigating permitting, identifying financing opportunities, finding the right commercial location or connecting with educational and economic development partners, the Chamber serves as a trusted resource and connector.
Much of this work happens quietly. We don’t ask for credit, nor do we try to take it. But one conversation and one connection at a time, those connections often become the catalyst for lasting business success and they were made possible by the Chamber. That is enough credit for us!
The Chamber also encourages leadership by connecting business professionals with volunteer opportunities, committees, community initiatives, educational programming and civic engagement. Strong businesses need strong communities, and strong communities need engaged business leaders. We understand and promote that!
Your Advocate at the Table
One of the Chamber’s most important responsibilities is representing the interests of our business community.
When legislation, regulations, infrastructure projects or public policy decisions have the potential to impact local businesses, someone needs to make sure the business perspective is part of the conversation.
That’s where the Chamber comes in.
Whether we’re writing letters of support, meeting with elected officials, participating in regional planning efforts or helping explain how proposed decisions affect employers, our goal is always the same: creating an environment where businesses can succeed.
Many of these conversations happen long before they make headlines. While they may not always be visible, they often have lasting impacts on the economic health of our region.
Celebrating Growth – Big and Small
Ribbon cuttings may seem ceremonial, but they represent something much bigger.
Every new business opening, expansion, relocation or major investment tells a story about confidence in our community. When we celebrate these milestones, we’re not just cutting a ribbon — we’re welcoming entrepreneurs, recognizing investment and encouraging residents to support local businesses.
Those celebrations also introduce new businesses to the broader community and help generate visibility during one of the most important times in a company’s journey. These successes deserve to be celebrated.
Building Stronger Businesses Together
No business owner has all the answers. Fortunately, they don’t have to. One of the Chamber’s greatest strengths is knowing who can help.
Some of the regular types of questions we hear: Where can I get assistance with financing? Where can I find workforce training? I’m searching for opportunities to expand my market or even to export? Trying to find available commercial space? Wondering which agency handles permits or licensing?
No matter the question or barrier to business, the Chamber serves as a connector, bringing together the right people and organizations to solve problems and create opportunities.
Our partnerships with educational institutions, economic development organizations, workforce agencies, municipalities, nonprofit organizations and regional partners mean businesses have access to an entire network of expertise – not just one office.
Preparing for Tomorrow – Today
Perhaps no example better illustrates the importance of collaboration than the upcoming Blatnik Bridge replacement project. A project of this size naturally raises questions and concerns. But it also presents an opportunity.
Rather than waiting until construction begins, businesses throughout our region have already started planning, collaborating and preparing for what lies ahead. The Chamber is proud to be part of those conversations and a vital part of the education process
Working alongside regional partners, government agencies, transportation leaders and economic development organizations, we’re helping ensure businesses have access to information, resources, and planning tools well before changes occur.
The businesses that begin planning today will be better positioned to succeed tomorrow and the Chamber is helping to collect the data and provide guidance on how to successfully navigate this project – the largest infrastructure project in Wisconsin/Minnesota history.
