Universities of Wisconsin Board of Meet at UW-Superior

The University of Wisconsin-Superior welcomed the Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents, along with UW chancellors, provosts and guests, to campus Oct. 7-9. This marks the first time since 2019 that UW-Superior has hosted a Board of Regents meeting.

As the Anchor of the North, UW-Superior is uniquely situated near Lake Superior and serves the largest geographic area of any of the 13 Universities of Wisconsin. During their visit, regents will have the opportunity to experience the UW-Superior campus and the natural beauty of the region, connect with students, faculty and staff, and see firsthand the impact UW-Superior is making across the region and beyond.

Regents arriving Tuesday evening had the opportunity to attend a lecture by Alexandra Cousteau, granddaughter of famed ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, as well as the Dig Pink fundraiser volleyball match.

A full slate of meetings for various councils and UW-wide leadership groups will take place Wednesday, followed by the Board of Regents meeting Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room. The meeting, which is open to the public, will feature an opening Honor Song performed by the Sky Nation Ojibwe drum group, comments from a UW-Superior student, and a presentation by Interim Chancellor Maria Cuzzo highlighting UW-Superior’s accomplishments and opportunities for the future.

During the meeting, the regents will also present the Regents Business Partnership Award to National Bank of Commerce in recognition of the bank’s longstanding partnership with and support of UW-Superior and its students.

On Thursday evening, the campus and community are invited to attend a special public concert featuring talented UW-Superior Music Department students and faculty. The performance will begin at 6 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King, a venue renowned for its exceptional acoustics.

About the Board of Regents

The Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System consists of 18 members, 16 of whom are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate. Of those 16 members, 14 serve staggered seven-year terms. Two Universities of Wisconsin students are appointed to two-year terms, including one nontraditional student. The two ex officio members are the state superintendent of public instruction and the president of the Wisconsin Technical College System Board, or a designee.

The Board is responsible for establishing policies and rules governing the system; planning to meet the state’s future higher education needs; setting admission standards and policies; reviewing and approving university budgets; and establishing the regulatory framework within which individual universities operate while maintaining a high degree of autonomy.

The Board appoints the president of the Universities of Wisconsin and the chancellors of its 13 universities. It also grants tenure to faculty members.
