Cenovus Energy Superior Refinery has committed $260,000 to support student success, leadership development and research opportunities at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
“Strong communities and a strong energy sector rely on talented individuals with skills, ingenuity and practical experience,” said Matt Gunn, general manager of the Superior Refinery. “Sponsorships like this are a great example of what we can achieve when industry and education work together, creating opportunities for students, supporting workforce development and investing in the long-term success of the region.”
“Cenovus Energy is an extremely generous supporter and valued partner to the UWS Alumni & Friends Foundation,” said Jeanne Thompson, vice chancellor for the University Advancement Office. “Its most recent four-year sponsorship investment is a true testament to Cenovus’ dedication to providing extraordinary opportunities for our students and greater community.”
The UW-Superior Alumni & Friends Foundation will allocate the gift among six programs and funds:
Cenovus Women in Leadership Fund: Funding will support the Women in Leadership event from spring 2027 through spring 2030. The program helps foster the next generation of women leaders at UW-Superior and throughout the region.
Cenovus Energy Scholarship Fund: Beginning with the 2026-27 academic year, the fund will provide four $5,000 scholarships each year through 2029-30. Three scholarships will support students in the School of Business and Economics, and one will support a student majoring in a natural sciences field.
Superior Youth Leadership Program Fund: Cenovus will serve as a major sponsor of the program, which is administered by UW-Superior Continuing Education. The program provides leadership, personal growth and workforce development opportunities for high school students in Superior and Douglas County.
Cenovus Networking and Etiquette Dinner Fund: The event, open to students from all majors, is jointly managed by the School of Business and Economics and Career Services. Funding will support the program from spring 2027 through spring 2030.
Lake Superior Research Institute Sadie Ann Fellowship Fund: Beginning in summer 2026, the fellowship will provide support through summer 2029 for a 200-hour research experience available to natural sciences students.
UW-Superior Alumni & Friends Foundation Superior Fund: Funding for four years.
This latest sponsorship from Cenovus builds on a longstanding commitment to UW-Superior, including previous support for the Sadie Ann Education and Research Vessel, student scholarships, the construction of a new stadium and the establishment of the Women in Leadership Fund.
